The Magic Flute
At the newly-founded 2013 Easter Festival at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, one of Europe’s foremost ensembles, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, performed Mozart’s The Magic Flute. This was an original, modernized version staged by Canadian opera director Robert Carsen, who placed the orchestra literally centre-stage on a jaw-dropping set. A fabulous cast featuring Pavol Breslik (Tamino), Kate Royal (Pamina), Michael Nagy (Papageno), Dimitry Ivashchenko (Sarastro), and Ana Durlovski in the role of the Queen of the Night, along with an outstanding line-up in the secondary roles (Annick Massis, Madgalena Kozena, Nathalie Stutzmann, José Van Dam, James Elliott) glorified this much-loved music.
