Otello

Adapted from the original Shakespeare play, Rossini’s Otello has known a phenomenal success in its time before it was outshone by Verdi’s opera. Surprisingly modern, this piece remains unquestionably one of his best. It was rarely shown because of a peculiar casting: the three main male characters are tenors with a tricky tessitura. Otello especially requests power and an impressive virtuosity.
Cécilia Bartoli plays Desdemona for the first time, and delivers an unforgettable performance of astonishing dramatic intensity.
Muhai Tang leading the orchestra of the Zurich Opera house gives a new life to this pages featured among the most famous of the bel canto history, especially the ‘Canzone del Salice’ air (the willow song), one of the greatest Rossinian’s creation.
