Idéale audience
King Lear
André Engel had been thinking of directing King Lear for several years, to examine more closely the wild shifts of these scales that no justice is able to hold between its hands any longer, to follow its swings until the ultimate breaking point. Michel Piccoli had also been hesitating for twelve years to accept this part which is highly symbolic for him.
After these years of hesitation, Piccoli and Engel met at last to question and adapt Shakespeare in their own way at the Odéon Theatre-Atelier Berthier in Paris.
From this meeting around King Lear, from this theatrical event, was born the idea of filming the performance of the play for television, the direction of which was entrusted to Don Kent.
