The Fashioning of Western Man

Certain things are so familiar to us that they seem to have existed, unchanging, from time immemorial. The State, Law, Religion, for instance. We no longer realise that the West invented, as did other cultures, the institutions, the rituals and the ceremonies which enable man to be born, to live within society, to breed and to give up his place to those who are to succeed him.  The Fashioning of Western Man, based on the findings of the French anthropologist Pierre Legendre, takes us on a fascinating journey to the very heart of some of today’s strongest institutions : the Vatican, the army, an adoption home, the educational system, a multinational corporation and a hospital.
