Frank Scheffer, the Dutch documentary filmmaker whose work centers around the great contemporary composers of the 20th century, has finally completed A LABYRINTH OF TIME his major opus on the American composer Elliott Carter. He followed Carter during the course of the last 18 years and filmed him composing, rehearsing with the Arditti String Quartet, discussing music with Boulez and others, reminiscing on his student days with Nadia Boulanger, and enjoying life with his wife. Carter's comments on the many changes to society he has witnessed over the course of the century are very enlightening.
In MAHLER - I HAVE LOST TOUCH WITH THE WORLD, his third film on the composer after "Conducting Mahler" and "Attrazione d'Amore", Scheffer films Riccardo Chailly's last rehearsals with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He gives an in-depth illustration of the maestro's magnificently moving 9th Symphony, accompanied by comments from renowned Mahler biographer Henry-Louis de la Grange.
