The Paris Opera Ballet is one of the world's great ballet companies. The film will be about all aspects of the works and life of this cultural institution. I have been given permission to follow dancers, choreographers and company administrators through all the various aspects of their professional life...
Artistic performance and expression is a subject that i have explored in previous films. In 1995, i made Ballet, a film about the American Ballet Theatre. The film presents the company in rehearsal in their New York studio and on tour in Athens and Copenhagen; and the following year, La Comédie Française, about the famous Paris theatrical institution. I believe that not only would the sights and sounds of the Paris Opera Ballet make good film material, but that a film on this world renowned institution would be an important contribution to the documentation of the history of dance.
Frederick Wiseman
Director of landmark films such as Welfare, Meat and more recently The Last Letter, Frederick Wiseman will finish the 50 days shooting of his latest film Le Ballet de l'Opera De Paris on December 14th, in Paris. Ever faithfull to his willing of exploring the inner functionning of great institutions combined to those of expression and artistic performances, Frederick Wiseman has chosen this time to capture the day to day life of the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris. From board meetings to rehearsal, from star dancer to stagehand, from Garnier to Bastille, not a single cog, not a single drop of sweat should escape Wiseman's camera for this concession free portrait. As he did on his previous work, Frederick Wiseman is not only directing the film but also operates sound engineering and will edit the feature. Editing being an extremely important part of the making process in every film from Wiseman, it will take a year.
Frederick Wiseman's Le Ballet De l'Opéra De Paris is produced by Françoise Gazio and Pierre-Olivier Bardet for Idéale Audience. Feature will reach theatres in 2009. More details to come.
