African music’s biggest names assembled for a huge concert in Dakar’s Iba Mar Diop stadium. Their common cause : fight against malaria, a disease that still kills a child every 30 seconds in Africa. Initiated by Unicef, the U.N. Foundation and Youssou N'Dour, Senegal’s premier star, a prestigious line up was assembled last March to celebrate all music genres from the African continent. Sumitomo and Exxon Mobil were the main sponsors of the event.
Surrounding Youssou N'Dour were performers such as Joey Starr, Baaba Maal, Corneille, Manu Dibango, Rohkia Traoré, Salif Keita, Angelique Kidjo, Awadi And Friends, Orchestra Baobab, who played during two nights for an audience totalling 20,000.
Filming the event were two seasoned world music directors, Frenchman Martin Meissonnier, who directed the recording of the concert performances, and British producer-director Mick Csàky who filmed the 2-hour documentary "Africa Live - The Roll-back malaria concert". Mick Csaky's Antelope South production company co-produced the project with Idéale Audience, along with Arte, BBC, TV5 and other key broadcasters.
